Begun in the late 1990s, the First Congregational Church has organized eleven basketball
teams for boys and girls from the fourth grade through high school. Playing in the larger
Catholic Youth Organization league, teams compete against kids from throughout the city
and a few surrounding towns. Practice is held on Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday afternoons and on Saturday mornings in the nearly century old gymnasium above
the Church's social hall on Cherry Street. Director Paul Anderson not only recruits and
oversees the volunteer coaches, but he also coaches the teams.
